september 23, 2019 jigger clinic

Christa and Heather experienced their first Jigger Clinic. They were VERY impressed with the organization of the event and learned a lot!

Our team visited this school the week prior and identified 33 children out of 660 primary and high school students with jiggers. We treated around 45 total the day of the clinic. The students lined up in 2 lines and receive a sticker with a number to identify them. Then, they received a thorough foot washing. Their feet then soaked in a basin filled with a mixture of water and a red powder substance that forces the jiggers from the feet in 1-2 weeks time. (This process is much less painful than previous techniques.) The children were moved to a bench and given time for their feet to drip dry. The final step was to apply a thick layer of vaseline and distribute new shoes.

Careful records are kept noting the number of jiggers located in each foot and hand of every person treated. The team is able to followup in 2-3 weeks and check the progress of the treatment.

One of the worst cases we encountered today was from a student named Pauleen. We learned 6 people live in her home and her siblings were rounded up and brought to her school to be treated as well. Pauleen was found to have 80 jiggers in one foot and 85 in the other. Her hands were infected with 20 jiggers in one hand and 25 in the other. Her home was fumigated after we finished the clinic. We are eagerly awaiting an update about Pauleen and her family!

November 14, 2019 update on Pauleen

Pauleen’s jiggers are back but not as bad as before. Their return is attributed to their home which was said to be heavily infested. Today, we treated her again and other family members who had been infected. We also fumigated her house and the neighboring houses.

God is doing miracles in this family! They can't explain what is happening. We had good time with the family and neighbors and explained to them the life cycle of the jiggers and how they spread. The community had associated the jiggers with curses!

November 14, 2019 Update on Christine

Christine, another student who was treated in September, is free from jiggers and her prick wounds are fully healed.

She walks normally, sleeps well and does her best to keep them away. We are so happy to receive this wonderful update!

December 19, 2019 update on Pauleen

Pauline's jiggers are finally gone! She looks healthy and happy for the first time since we met her. All that is visible are the scars from her now prior infestation.

Thanks to our amazing donors, Give Amore visited Pauleen at Christmas and gifted her with a cow, a goat and a chicken. He also received 2 new dresses, and many supplies. Her family could not believe their eyes when they received such generous gifts.
